What does a shift leader do?
As a shift leader you carry out the company emergency plan. If there is a fire or any other emergency, you provide operational leadership to all the company emergency response officers within your organisation.
You give the signal to act, assign tasks to different company emergency response officers, and serve as the first point of contact for colleagues and professional emergency services. You ensure that company emergency response officers complete recurrent training and you manage company emergency response resources.

Duration of the training
You periodically complete recurrent training to keep your knowledge and skills up to date and to maintain the validity of your certificate. This is a one-day training.

What does it involve?
Part 1 is all about theory. Part 2 is practical and focuses on training as a unit/shift leader. This includes a practical assignment involving your own company. Conducting your practical assignment forms part of the exam. The practical assignments are carried out and exchanged with fellow students. You will learn the following:
- Health & Safety legislation and regulations
- Assessing safety aspects in daily and emergency situations
- Organisation of company emergency response
- Training and management of company emergency response officers
- Communication during deployment of company emergency response
- Evacuation tactics and techniques
- Management and control of resources
- Drawing up company emergency response exercises
