Chikungunya is a viral infection that is transmitted by a certain type of mosquitoes. These mosquitoes, which sting especially during the day, can also transmit dengue, another viral infection. Chikunguya was first observed in 1952 in Tanzania. In recent decades, this feverish disease has spread around the world.

How do you catch Chikungunya?

The Chikungunya virus is transmitted by mosquitoes that sting mainly during the day. But they can also be active in the early morning and in the evening at dusk. Especially during the rainy season, severe epidemics can sometimes break out in both urban areas and rural areas.

Where does Chikungunya occur?

The disease occurs in many tropical countries, both in urbanized areas and in rural areas.

What are the symptoms?

Infections without symptoms are rare. The condition is characterized by rapidly emerging fever, often accompanied by joint pains. In addition, muscle pains, headaches and rashes often occur. In particular, the joint pains can be severe and in some cases persist for weeks to months. After a week, the acute signs of infection usually disappear. There are few complications in general.

How can you avoid catching Chikungunya?

There is no vaccine against Chikungunya available yet. You are therefore advised to avoid bites by mosquitoes as much as possible. This is best done by wearing covering clothing, using mosquito repellents on uncovered skin and keeping living and sleeping areas mosquito-free.
