Medical support in the air
Airport Medical Services plays a crucial role in providing medical provisions on board aircraft. The crew may encounter medical incidents involving passengers, such as respiratory issues or cardiac problems. In such situations, Airport Medical Services is on standby to offer medical assistance and guidance to both the cockpit crew and cabin crew. They can establish contact with one of the ground-based doctors via a conference call through KLM's Operations Control Center (OCC). Our doctors specialize in assessing medical issues on board and possess specific expertise in aviation medicine.
Additionally, we equip aircraft with Medical Kits and AEDs. The Medical Kits contain essential medical equipment and medications required for managing medical incidents. This includes medications, bandaging supplies, and devices such as blood pressure monitors, glucose meters, and pulse oximeters.
Ground and offshore medical support
Airport Medical Services plays an advisory and coordinating role at and around Schiphol Airport regarding the purchase and usage of medical equipment, both on the ground and in the air. For instance, we oversee the inspection and maintenance of all AEDs and fixed defibrillators at the airport.
In the event of an emergency at the airport, the doctors from Airport Medical Services play an important role, for example on risks around infectious diseases. At the airport, specific rules, set by the Public Health Act, are turned into operational processes to prevent the importation of infectious diseases at Schiphol. We collaborate closely with various authorities, including the WHO, RIVM, and GGD, to ensure that policies are clear, implementable, and effective.
Additionally, we provide 24/7 medical backup and all necessary medical supplies, such as medication, oxygen, AEDs, and bandaging materials, for numerous platforms in the North Sea.
Medical transport
Airlines also facilitate the transportation of sick, recovering, and disabled passengers. Airport Medical Services provides essential support for KLM in this regard. It is essential that this support is carried out with the greatest care to ensure that the passenger's condition does not worsen as a result of the transport, and that flight operations remain undisturbed. Organising and executing these medical transports responsibly is very important. We collaborate closely with emergency response centres in the Netherlands.
