Firefighter health check (PPME)
Firefighters are heroes. KLM Health Services has built up years of experience in carrying out periodic preventative medical examinations (PPME) so that you, as an employer, can concentrate on other things important to you. The PPME is the periodic medical examination for employees in the operational fire service. We conduct the PPME to assess and monitor the state of health of your firefighters so that your employees can do their job properly and responsibly, now and in the future.
What does a PPME involve?
The firefighter health check consists of two parts: medical and physical.
During the medical part of the check, aspects including your height, weight and blood pressure are measured. Your eyesight and hearing are also checked. A medical examination will be conducted. Your mental state, eyesight, hearing, and any risk factors linked to cardiovascular disease will be assessed.
The physical part of the health check focuses on potential situations during a call-out. The examining doctor tests for fitness and overall well-being. This part of the examination consists of:
- Ladder-climbing test
- Balance test
- Dragging a dummy
- Forcing a door open
- Crouching through a tunnel
- Stair-climbing test
When is the PPME necessary?
This medical examination is applicable to employees in the operational fire service of the fire brigade. It is age-dependent and required by law.
- If a firefighter is younger than 40, they will need to undergo the examination every four years.
- If a firefighter is between 40 and 50, they will need to undergo the examination every other year.
- If a firefighter is over 50, they will need to undergo the examination every year.
Once a firefighter has completed the examination, they will receive a certificate of medical fitness.
We offer the following medical examinations:
- Periodic firefighter assessment (PPME protocol)
- Pre-appointment medical examination (PPME protocol)
- Firefighter reassessment (PPME protocol)
- Periodic assessment for firefighting duty officers
