Crime

Even abroad, in certain areas of many large cities, there can be safety concerns. This includes not only "petty" crimes like pickpocketing and theft, but also more serious offences.

Here are some tips:

  • Make sure to educate yourself about the risks and high-risk areas in advance (Ministry of foreign affairs).
  • If you have no reason to be in a high-risk area, then stay away from it.
  • When using taxis, ensure you choose a safe one (for example, through your hotel).
  • Don't engage with invitations or transactions that you don't trust.
  • It's preferable not to walk alone, especially in the evening or at night.
  • Avoid aggressive individuals, conflicts or fights, and groups.
  • Let others know where you are and make sure you can be reached.
  • Adapt to local customs and habits, and avoid causing irritation or aggression.
  • Be cautious with alcohol and drugs; don't become the cause of any violence.
  • Avoid drawing attention to yourself as a "rich" tourist.
  • Make sure to take out a good travel insurance policy.
