COVID-19 (coronavirus)
COVID-19 is an illness caused by the coronavirus SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). The disease can lead to respiratory symptoms and fever. Initially, the symptoms may resemble a common cold, but in severe cases, breathing difficulties can arise.
The course of the illness varies from person to person. While some individuals may experience mild symptoms or none at all, others may suffer from long-term effects or even die. The virus spreads through droplets in the air, such as when a person coughs, sneezes, sings, or talks. Older adults, those with underlying health conditions, or individuals with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of becoming seriously ill. Some people may experience long-lasting symptoms after a COVID-19 infection, a condition known as 'Long COVID' or 'PASC' (Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 Infection).
Where does COVID-19 occur?
COVID-19 is present worldwide.
What are the symptoms?
- Elevated temperature or fever
- Coughing
- Cold-like symptoms (nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat)
- Shortness of breath
- Breathing difficulties
- Sudden loss of smell and/or taste
How to prevent COVID-19?
Receiving a COVID-19 vaccination helps to prevent severe illness if you become infected. Although vaccinated individuals can still catch the virus, the chance of getting very ill is lower. Additionally, it is advised to follow basic hygiene measures, such as coughing and sneezing into the inside of your elbow, using disposable tissues, and regularly washing your hands thoroughly. The virus does not survive well outside the body and can be easily destroyed with standard washing and cleaning products.
